This was my mom's. I just got it brough back home with me. She had started to refinish it, but obviously didn't get it done. It is currently in the sun porch (which this year is more of a storage room.....I need to find a place for the generator...other than in there). Anyway, DH wants me to do whatever I'm going to do with it while it is in the sunporch. Since my mom started to do something, I need to do something. I'm not even sure what color I want it. I know DH would prefer me to stain it, but..... Besides that door on the bottom left hand side was taken off (evidently the hinges broke off or the wood broke by the hinges) the door was turned around so where the hinges used to be has been kind of filled in with probably wood putty and are now on the open side of the door. I hope that makes sense.

The inside color is a greenish.

The outside appears to have been a cream color, a green and then the brown. So I need to figure out what to do with the outside and also the inside. I want to get it so I can leave at least one of the doors on top open for display purposes. I really love the cabinet (DH and the kids, don't feel the same). Cindy

Oh Cindy! I LOVE that cabinet! Oh my Gosh! How could someone not like that?! I think it would look great painted red, mustard, or black. Maybe give it that prim look. I would love to have that in my home! Lucky you! Can't wait to see it finished! Life is what happens while you're making plans

That's going to one beautiful cabinet when you get it done! I'd paint it white or a kitchen yellow, like they would do in the old days! Is that tin under the top piece? Maybe you could replace that with copper. I love copper for the kitchen since it is antibacterial. What ever you end up doing to it, that cabinet will always mean something to you since it was your Mom's.

I'm loving this piece!!!!
Looks to me like the green was the original color and then the others after that.
I'd go with a deep brick red and a mustard interior.

Love your cabinet too Cindy!! I think I'd go with the deep brick red on the outside and then mustard on the inside, just as Karen mentioned in her post! I think those paint colors would really make your cabinet look great!! Let us know what paint colors you decided on, and please do post a pic once you're all finished painting your cabinet......~Lynn

Cindy, my guess is that there may have been an oblong wooden peg of sorts to help keep the doors closed. The hole is where the screw would have been. Does this make sense? So then you could twist the wooden peg up to have access to open the doors. I have one on one of my cupboards, if you don't understand, I'll try to get a picture of it.

Renee, That's a good thought! I never thought of that. I know exactly what you are talking about. If you get a chance though, I would like to see a picture in case I decide to have DH rig one up for me. Cindy

What an awesome piece. And it was your mom's. That is so cool. I also like Karen's red/mustard combination suggestion.

Cindy - the red we used from that paint is New England Red and this is about the only picture I have of it - we used it on this Pantry table and chair and a couple other pieces.

I started stripping the paint off the cabinet today using oven cleaner from the $ Tree. When up close and personal to the cabinet I discovered that above where that hole is in between the two upper doors....if you look up a ways you can kind of see a mark going horizontally, well there evidently use to be a metal plate there. There is still a small nail hole and you can kind of see the outline of where the plate use to be. I sure wish that plate was still there, and I wish I knew what it said.
How much paint do you think I need to get to do the outside of the cabinet? Also how much will I need for the inside of the cabinet?
I need to go get more oven cleaner before I can continue. Cindy

Hmm..thought I posted on here..but either wat I love you cabinet! How very special that it was your moms also. As far as the holes in between the door, I'm thinking maybe there was a catch type latch hardware there at one time similar to this???

I will try to take a picture of it tonight to show you how far I have gotten. Not far enough. The oven cleaner....let's see, it worked better on the top half than on the bottom half. Then again I had to go buy more and although the second batch didn't take my breath away...it also doesn't really strip the paint too well. Both batches came from the Dollar Tree. So now I am using a sander and it is sloooooooow going. DD is home sick so that isn't helping any. Cindy

This is what I was working on when the shelf in the bedroom closet fell. I haven't done anything with it since then. Here is a pic so far.

This picture shows the hole I was telling you about. It has a little mark right around the hole, like an indentation, but nothing away from the hole.

Thanks Dan, DD seems to be over whatever she had. DS got sent home earlier in the week and he still has a nasty sounding cough.

Cindy,
Are you using an electric sander? It's coming along there. I'm sorry you have had such a hard week this week. It'll get better for you real soon. Your cabinet will look awesome when it's all done! Keep a smile lady!

Yes, I was using an electric sander. However, I went out and bought some expensive paint and stain remover. Making progress. I worked on it a lot yesterday and it really didn't get as far done as I would have hoped. Not going to be able to work on it today or tomorrow to speak of. Maybe a few minutes each evening. My goal WAS to have this done by Thanksgiving. NEW goal is to have this done the week of my birthday. DH is leaving town on my birthday (September 21st). So I am hoping to have it done by the end of that week and in the dining room....somewhere. I don't have that figured out yet. Need to get rid of that 30 gallon aquarium first. I may end of moving it out and into the sunporch when I'm done, but I really need to get rid of those fish. There is only about 3 left. I have another sick kiddo today. The middle DS that wasn't sick. Now has a combination of what his brother and sister had last week. Oh what a school year this is going to be. Cindy

Karen, I worked on the cabinet most all day yesterday. I still have a long way to go. I looked up that place to buy that paint locally. Well I drove there (43 miles) only to find out that they went out of business 5 years ago. The business next door told me where they went to (65 miles) and they went out of business at that location 2 years ago. The moral of the story is that there website is not up to date. Anyway, I did buy some paint with the hopes of getting it done this weekend. I don't think that will happen, so I am hoping by the end of the week maybe. It is very cold here, but I am going to go out to the garage and try to work on it some more today. Cindy

Well, needless to say with two kids now with the swine flu in my house, this project has taken a back burner. It has been moved out of the sun porch. The top of it is in the dining room, and I do have the inside painted....a mustard color. The bottom half is in the garage. DH wants to do some more to the top before he thinks I should paint it. The bottom needs more of the paint off especially the front. I really had thoughts of working on it some this week while DH was away, but obviously that didn't happen. I need to get it all done. The way things are now...the dining room is disorganized (the only good thing is I don't have to worry about anyone coming over since we have the swine flu in the house.....nobody wants anything to do with us), and the van can't be put in the garage until the bottom half is moved. Maybe it's the stress of the situation or lack of sleep, but I keep dreaming of how to decorate it. sigh Cindy

Cindy, just keep dreaming. Take good care of those two children and hopefully they will be over the flue real soon. We will enjoy the cabinet when your dreams come true and it is all finished.
