I decided to try my hand at grungying (is that even a word??!!) up some candles.  I bought just plain vanilla scented pillars at Wally World and had my DH drill out the top for me.  I bought some of those battery powered flickering tea lights at the Dollar Tree (got 2 for a dollar!), grungied them up a little and stuck them down in the hole that DH drilled.  I think they turned out pretty good!

Thanks guys.  All I did was mix some instant coffee with some allspice and cinnamon.  Put Mod Podge on the candle and rolled it in the spice-coffee mixture.  I let them set up on wax paper on my kitchen counter for about a day to make sure they were good and dry. Then I sprayed some sealer on them to keep the grunge from falling off.  That's all there is to it!!

Patti, I thought you might like my decor!!  I love it and think of you everytime I look at it.  You are very sweet!!

Hugs,

Donna you have really been a busy girl.  Isn't it  fun getting our husbands in on all our projects. I love your candles and was

wondering if you have tried to make the grubby battery taper  candles.  DT has them 2 for $1.00 and my turn out

good at least I thought they did.  You do them the same as you did you regular candle.  Then I made the Grubby Silicone bulbs.  Would post a picture but haven't figure that one out yet. happy

Yes, those are fun! Mod Podge~ the crafters' best friend! LOL! Love that stuff! They turned out very nice. Keep getting your DH on board with it, they can even come up with some great ideas every now and again.

They turned out great, very warm looking for fall and winter.  I'll bet they smell good too.

I tried to grudge up some tapered candles, I used Elmers glue, rolled them in cinnamon and instant coffee, then let them dry...but I had them in a window and the grudge peeled off....1st and last attempt.  Didn't try to make anymore!

Now don't be a party pooper Pam. Maybe it was the glue you used, try it again with the modge podge. That's what I used and none of mine have peeled off.

Don't give up Pam! To stop them from peeling or all of the spices falling off, I normally do either a top coat of mod podge or a sealer after the grunge has dried.

What a difference in those candles!!  I've grunged some too and have done it 2 ways.  I've used mod podge and rolled in spices and I've also mixed spices into mod podge and painted on.

Kristi,

Do they look very different from each other?  I never thought to mix the spices in with the Mod Podge and then paint it on the candles.  Do you have any pics of ones you've done that too?  I would love to see what they look like.

Donna, these are pics of glass jars that I grunged.  The first one I did by applying mod podge and rolling or sprinkling on spices.  The second I added spices to mod podge and painted on.  The second method turned out clumpier and I'd say uses more mod podge.  Sorry the pics are blurry.  Can't figure out what's going on with my camera!!

I think I like the clumpier better. I have made some of these myself. You can put the grungy mixture on anything. I have used it on glass bottles, tin soup cans. I'm sure there are more, just can't think of any. And it's great craft to get the kids to help

You inspired me Donna   : )   Ran an errand this morning & found a prim shop near here that I wasn't aware of before (that makes 4 in this general area & 2 others an hour away!).  Anyway, I saw a couple battery operated pillar candles that looked really ugly (just plain white plastic) & I thought ah-ha!  I'll grunge these up like Donna did hers ... lol!  Stopped at Walmart afterward to get some Mod Podge (last bottle they had!) & now I've just got to get to it   : )

Blessings,

Shirlee
